A Day In The Life Of A Clinical Officer; Jane Mita

Can you describe your morning routine on a typical workday, starting from when you wake up?

On a typical workday, my morning routine kicks off at 5:30 am. As soon as I wake up, my first task is to feed my seven cats. Ensuring they have enough food and water for the day brings me a sense of peace, knowing that they are well taken care of. Once that's done, I proceed to take a shower and prepare myself a steaming cup of coffee to get ready for the day ahead.

What do you typically need to plan for work before leaving your home in the morning?

My job involves responding to emergencies. Therefore, I always make sure I have my JKIA pass which grants me unrestricted access to all parts of the airport. Additionally, I pack my scrubs (uniform) in my carry-on bag to ensure I have them readily available.

Can you walk us through a typical day in your role at the company?

We have day shifts that last 9 or 11 hours, and night shift from 8 pm to 8 am. On weekends, we work from 8 am to 8 pm. At the 24-hour JKIA clinic, we serve KQ staff, external clients, and passengers.

My typical workday starts at 9:00 am when I receive a handover report, check my emails, and attend to any waiting patients promptly. We provide laboratory services, which saves time for staff and the organization. We also provide Aviation Medicine services to support airport operations and ensure that our staff and passengers are well equipped and supported to function optimally in aviation as guided by local and international regulators. Additionally, we provide medical clearance for passengers with conditions, both online and at the airport. Emergencies are also part of our responsibilities.

Are there any exceptions or unusual situations that you have to handle in your role?

In my role, we frequently extend our working hours to accommodate various unforeseen circumstances. This is particularly common when we need to arrange hospital referrals for passengers in need of advanced medical care. Additionally, we provide medical escort services, which sometimes require us to accompany sick passengers to other KQ destinations for their medical treatment.

On the rare occasions when there is a lull during the day, I take the opportunity to familiarize myself with our regulatory manuals and stay updated on the latest medical news and trends.

When does your workday typically end, and how do you usually wrap up your day's tasks?

At the conclusion of my workday, which is typically at 8 pm, I provide a comprehensive handover report to my colleague who is starting the night shift. I then leave filled with a sense of fulfillment knowing that I have delivered quality service to humanity and left our customers satisfied.

How does your day start?    Most days will find me waking up at 4:00am especially when I am on the day shifts. My first task of the day is to feed my three dogs.  From there I help prepare my kids for school and ensure they have breakfast on time before the school bus comes around to pick them. I prefer to leave shortly after given that my clock in is 8:00am.

What’s your day like upon waking up?  My day starts at 4:30 A.M. I never skip a day without taking a few glasses of warm water in the morning and doing a bit of exercise then I prepare my daughter for school.  Being the only KQ staff in my station simply means everything literally depends on me (operational, commercial, and administrative duties). That also means, I am the CEO, HOD, DO, Kilo 1, Lima Lima, Office Groomer, Load Controller, name them. There are a lot of duties that must be carried out right from the moment I wake up in the morning.
