Fly Net Zero by 2050

Fly Net Zero is the commitment of airlines to achieve net zero carbon by 2050. At the 77th IATA Annual General Meeting held in Boston, USA, on October 4th, 2021, member airlines made a significant pledge to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This commitment, known as Fly Net Zero aims to align air transport with the objectives of the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C. This resolution signifies a significant step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly aviation industry.

The Sustainable Flight Challenge (TSFC)

TSFC aims to bring some of the aviation industry together through friendly competition. TSFC is inspired by the great London to Melbourne aviation race of 1934, which generated many innovations and changes to international travel. Similarly, TSFC is about which airline can operate the most sustainable flight or generate the most significant innovation to further reduce aviation’s impact on the environment. Participating airlines will be judged across 14 categories by an international and diverse panel of judges.

SkyTeam aims to bring some of the aviation industry together, through a friendly competition, to create innovation and take action now. The goal of the challenge is to further reduce aviation’s impact on the environment and to spur breakthrough ideas, which can be shared across the industry.

The Sustainable Flight Challenge (TSFC)

Our Participation in TSFC

Kenya Airways has taken part in TSFC for two years in a row (2022 & 2023).

  • In 2022, Kenya Airways (KQ) In-Flight catering facility in collaboration with NAS Servair (NAS) won in the Best Partnership category.
  • In 2023, KQ piloted the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on the flight submitted in TSFC. This is expected to be the first pathway to testing the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel within Africa. The pilot flight will generate valuable data and insights that can inform policy decisions, regulatory frameworks, and industry best practices related to SAF.
