On August 14th Villa Rosa Kempinski played host to the legal 500 General Counsel (GC) Power list East Africa 2024, bringing together recognized senior in-house counsels from various organizations and industries across the region. The inaugural event recognized 130 legal professionals in the GC Power list, where one of our own Habil Anyanzwa Waswani, Director Legal Services and Company Secretary was among those feted.
So, you may ask, what is the legal 500 GC Power list? The GC Power List is a prestigious global ranking that honors top legal professionals and firms for their outstanding contributions. Nomination to this list is a mark of distinction and one of the highest accolades a lawyer can achieve.
Habil expressed gratitude for the recognition, attributing it to his contributions across various stages of his career i.e. banking, insurance, and now aviation. He described the accolade as a significant personal achievement and thanked those responsible for his nomination. "This award is a significant personal achievement that I treasure. It reflects my contributions across various sectors throughout my legal career, culminating in my current role in Kenya Airways."
Habil also spoke on the significant contributions made by his young team, which he set up 3 years ago when he joined the legal operations of Kenya Airways. “Previously, a portion of what the legal Department does was outsourced. Me coming in 2021 meant centralizing everything fully within here and setting up a team that can efficiently run KQ’s global operations.”
Regarding the challenges he has faced, Habil highlighted the difficulty of assembling the right team to centralize and manage the company's legal operations. “I am glad I was able to put together a team that is young, dynamic, diverse and growing that can identify, assess and make sure all the legal risks the airline faces or potentially face is covered.”
Habil Waswani’s inclusion in the inaugural GC Power List event in the region is a remarkable achievement, highlighting a major milestone for both him and Kenya Airways. The Pride of Africa is proud of you Habil.

In the heart of East Africa, Nairobi, Kenya, we at Kenya Airways were proud to host the 37th IATA Ground Handling Conference (IGHC), the very first of its kind to happen on African soil. This was not just a conference for us; rather a powerful testament to the leading role we see ourselves playing in shaping the future of aviation across our continent. In his declaration our CEO Mr. Allan Kilavuka remarked, "We recognize the critical importance of ground handling, the core focus of this conference, to our very operations. As a significant ground handler here in Nairobi, likely the largest at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and also in Mombasa, ground handling is an indispensable part to our airline’s existence. This is our daily reality, and we are deeply invested in its efficiency and safety."
