At Kenya Airways, connecting Africa to the world goes hand in hand with protecting our planet. Our 2024 Sustainability Report shows how we are making real progress toward greener aviation.
We are leading the way in Africa by investing in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF); a cleaner alternative to traditional jet fuel. Our goal is to use a 10% SAF blend by 2030. We are also working on building Kenya’s first SAF production facility and were proud to be recognized with the “Best Approach to Scaling SAF” award.
We are aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 through the following:
• Flying more efficiently with smarter routes and lighter planes.
• Upgrading our fleet with fuel-saving aircraft like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 737s.
• Switching 12% of our ground vehicles to run on electricity.
• We have also planted trees and support Kenya’s reforestation goals to help absorb emissions.
We have built a plant that turns plastic waste into diesel; helping to power our ground equipment with less impact. Plus, 90% of the electricity we use at JKIA comes from renewable sources.
We follow the 5Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover. We have banned single-use plastics, up cycled old materials, and now recycle nearly half of our waste with some food waste from flights being turned into animal feed.
Passengers may already notice changes like bamboo cutlery, less plastic, and greener airports; small shifts that make a big difference.
We also manage our own water systems and constantly look for ways to save by using low-flow taps, refill stations, and careful water planning to keep our use sustainable.
Our tree-planting efforts continue. After planting 1 million trees in Ngong’ Forest, we are now committed to 1.2 million trees every year. We are also exploring drone-based tree planting and combining reforestation with beekeeping to support local communities.
We invite our passengers, partners, and stakeholders to join us in creating a more sustainable future; every choice, big or small, counts.
