Leading with Courage and Resilience
By Sharon Kiende
When Dr. Eva Njuguna joined Kenya Airways in 2020, she stepped into a storm. Days before her start date, the airline’s operations came to a sudden halt due to COVID-19. For many, it would have been a daunting beginning. For Dr. Eva, it became a defining chapter in her career.
“I joined just days before our birds stopped flying,” she recalls. “What was meant to be a fresh start suddenly felt like stepping straight into a storm. Despite the uncertainty, I chose to stand firm. Looking back, I am grateful I did.”
A seasoned medical professional with over 13 years in practice and eight years in leadership, Dr. Eva brings a strategic, people-centered approach to healthcare management. Her MBA in Healthcare Management from Strathmore Business School complements her medical expertise with strong leadership skills, equipping her to navigate crises while keeping people at the heart of decision-making.
Balancing Teams and Organizational Goals
For Dr. Eva, leadership is about more than managing crises. It is about building trust, fostering teamwork, and empowering people.
“Balancing my team’s needs while achieving organizational goals is one of the greatest challenges of leadership,” she explains. “Clear communication is essential. Transparency builds trust, and trust strengthens teams. Leadership is a continuous journey, and adaptability, patience, and effective communication make all the difference.”
Her approach demonstrates that strong leadership is not about perfection. It is about showing up consistently and authentically, especially during challenging times.
Empowering Women Leaders
A passionate advocate for women in leadership, Dr. Eva believes in leading with authenticity and vulnerability. She openly shares both successes and struggles to inspire others to pursue leadership roles fearlessly.
“I have had the privilege of mentoring many women, both young and experienced,” she says. “My message to them is simple: embrace your ambitions, silence self-doubt, and take up space unapologetically.”
For her, mentorship is not just about guidance. It is about modeling resilience, purpose, and the courage to navigate uncharted paths.
A Legacy of Bold Leadership
Looking ahead, Dr. Eva hopes her work inspires the next generation of women leaders to believe in themselves and claim the space they deserve.
“Too often, women hold themselves back not because of external barriers, but due to self-doubt. Someone once told me, ‘No one is coming to save you.’ That stuck with me. My hope is that women who come after me embrace this mindset, lead with confidence, advocate for themselves, and thrive unapologetically.”
Her story is a testament to the power of resilience, courage, and purposeful leadership, qualities that define Kenya Airways’ commitment to people, growth, and impact.
