World Environment Day: Kenya Airways Leads Land Restoration and Sustainability Efforts in Ngong Forest

On 5th June 2024, Kenya Airways joined the rest of the world in celebrating World Environment Day with a series of impactful and innovative activities aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and community engagement under the theme "Accelerating land restoration, building drought resilience, and halting desertification progress."

World Environment Day: Kenya Airways Leads Land Restoration and Sustainability Efforts in Ngong Forest

The day kicked off with a tree-planting event sponsored by Kenya Airways and its partners at CITAM Kiserian, to launch the 2 billion fruit and energy seed trees by 2030 across Africa. It was highlighted that the fruit trees would serve as a food source, while the energy seed trees would be utilized as bio-feedstocks for producing sustainable aviation fuel, providing an income for the school.

Fahari Aviation, a subsidiary of Kenya Airways, demonstrated the use of drones for environmental monitoring and conservation. The drones, which are equipped with advanced imaging capabilities highlight their ability to survey large areas, monitor tree growth, and assess land restoration projects with high precision and efficiency.

Afterwards the team proceeded to Olteyani, home to the Kenya Airways’ Forest of 1 million trees in Ngong that was planted 13 years ago with the help of various partners. Participants were entertained by students from Olteyani Secondary School with traditional Maasai Songs and poems themed around World Environment Day.

As a symbolic gesture of the company's dedication to the environment and community empowerment, beehives were handed over to the nearby school and community.

“Beekeeping is recognized for its role in forest conservation by promoting biodiversity, aiding pollination, and offering sustainable income opportunities. Through this initiative, Kenya Airways aims to positively impact the environment and livelihoods of local communities,” said Grace Vihenda - Manager, Innovation & Sustainability – Kenya Airways

Participants engaged in a high-energy treasure hunt as a way for the Kenya Airways staff to experience, explore and appreciate the forest. As teams navigated the challenges of the treasure hunt, they identified and learnt about the diverse types of trees and their benefits.

The transformation of Ngong Forest stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved through dedicated reforestation efforts and community engagement. Kenya Airways’ commitment to planting a million trees annually and integrating economic initiatives like beekeeping ensures that this forest will continue to flourish and benefit both the environment and the local people. KQ is keen to replicate this model of sustainable development in other regions grappling with deforestation and economic disparities through the right partnerships and community involvement, thus enabling lasting positive change.
