From Cabin to Couture

Some people spend a lifetime searching for their passion. Caroline Karimi found two. 

By day, she’s a Flight Attendant with Kenya Airways, welcoming passengers on board, ensuring their safety and turning ordinary journeys into memorable experiences. Back on the ground, she swaps her uniform for measuring tape, fabric and thread, bringing bespoke fashion designs to life through her tailoring business. 

At first glance, aviation and fashion may seem worlds apart. But for Caroline, they’ve always shared one thing in common: people. 

Every flight begins with preparation. Before passengers board, she joins her fellow crew members for a briefing to review safety procedures, discuss passenger information and align on the service plan for the journey ahead. Once the aircraft doors close, her focus shifts entirely to the people on board anticipating their needs, solving problems before they arise and creating an experience that passengers will remember long after they land. 

It’s a role that has shaped the way she sees the world. 

Years of serving passengers from different cultures and backgrounds have taught her that no two people are the same. Every interaction calls for empathy. Every detail matters. And every small act of kindness has the power to transform someone’s day. 

Those lessons don’t stay in the cabin. 

They travel with her to a place that feels just as familiar; the gentle hum of a sewing machine. 

Long before she ever fastened a cabin crew scarf, Caroline was a young girl in Chaani, Mombasa, watching another craft unfold. Her mother owned a tailoring shop, and while she wasn’t yet the one behind the sewing machine, she was always nearby—fetching fabric, organising materials and quietly absorbing everything that was happening around her. 

Without realising it, she was learning. 

Although aviation eventually became her profession, the memories of that little tailoring shop never left her. Years later, she returned to the skill she had admired as a child, refined it and transformed it into a thriving business of her own. 

For Caroline, fashion has never been about clothes alone. 

She sees every garment as an opportunity to help someone feel confident, express their individuality and tell their own story. Whether she’s designing an outfit for a special occasion or creating something to wear every day, what matters most is the smile that comes when a client sees the finished piece for the first time. 

Interestingly, the skies have become one of her greatest sources of inspiration. 

Travelling across different countries has exposed her to diverse cultures, fabrics, colours and styles that continue to influence her creative process. A pattern spotted in one destination or a silhouette admired in another often finds its way into her next collection, proving that every journey has the potential to inspire the next design. 

Balancing two careers is no small feat, but Caroline has learned that success isn’t about having more hours in the day; it’s about making every hour count. 

Careful planning, discipline and the support of a trusted team allow her tailoring business to continue flourishing even when she’s thousands of feet above the ground. 

It’s the same discipline that Kenya Airways has helped her cultivate throughout her career. Working as cabin crew has strengthened her professionalism, attention to detail and appreciation for the different needs of every passenger qualities that have become just as valuable in running a business as they are in delivering exceptional service. 

Looking back, Caroline is grateful to work in an environment that encourages people to grow beyond their job titles. She believes pursuing personal passions not only develops individual talents but also creates more fulfilled, well-rounded people who bring fresh perspectives back into the workplace. 

Her advice to colleagues with a dream tucked away is refreshingly simple: believe in yourself, start where you are and allow your passion to grow. Every challenge, she believes, is another opportunity to learn, improve and become better than you were yesterday. 

Because beyond the uniform, beyond the sewing machine, and beyond the many roles she plays, Caroline remains driven by one purpose which is to make a positive difference wherever she goes. 

Perhaps that’s what passion really looks like. It doesn’t ask us to choose between the things we love. Instead, it finds beautiful ways to weave them together, creating a life that is every bit as rewarding as the journeys we help others take.
