Driven by Passion, Powered by Purpose
BY SHARON KIENDE
Long before she found herself working beneath the wings of aircraft at Kenya Airways, Caroline Wanjiru was captivated by something much closer to the ground; big machines.
As a child, she would visit a quarry simply to watch heavy equipment at work. There was something fascinating about the way the machines moved, the precision with which they operated and the skill required to control them. That fascination never faded. Instead, it grew into a career that today sees her operating some of the equipment that keeps Kenya Airways' operations moving safely and efficiently.
"Before every operation, My role as an Equipment Operator involves carrying out pre-operation checks to ensure the equipment I’m operating is in good condition and ready to safely complete the day's tasks." Caroline explains.
It's a role that demands focus, attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to safety. Every day begins with making sure the equipment is fit for purpose before supporting the many activities that happen around an aircraft on the ground.
For Caroline, however, the journey to Ground Services was about more than just a career. It was about pursuing a lifelong passion. "From childhood, I always had a fascination with big machines," she says. "I used to visit a quarry just to watch how they were operated, and that interest kept growing until I decided to study more about them after high school."
She later discovered that her love for the profession may have deeper roots.
"My grandmother once told me that my grandfather was an equipment operator at Wilson Airport. I believe that's where some of the inspiration came from."
Today, Caroline is trained and authorised to operate a tractor, tow tractor and pallet mover, with her sights firmly set on learning even more.
"I'm looking forward to training on more equipment such as the towbarless pushback," she says. "I really love equipment and can't wait for the day I push back Captain Koki in a B787. That would definitely be a fulfilling moment for me."
Her enthusiasm is unmistakable.
"I love how the equipment is made, how it operates and I find it all very fascinating."
As the only female Equipment Operator in Ground Services, Caroline has had to navigate challenges that go beyond mastering machinery.
"Sometimes being the only lady can feel isolating, as I have to be my own motivator and role model," she admits. "There are moments when I break down, but I always pick myself up and remind myself that I must keep pushing and make myself proud."
Working outdoors presents its own demands, from scorching sunshine to cold mornings, but preparation and a positive mindset help her meet every challenge head-on.
"I make sure I'm prepared for both cold and hot weather by dressing appropriately and protecting my skin. There are also moments of vulnerability, but I always find safe and practical ways to navigate them."
Ask Caroline what she's proudest of, and her answer isn't about the equipment she operates or the aircraft she supports. "My proudest moments are when I see someone I have mentored become the best version of themselves," she says. "That is something I truly treasure. It motivates me and encourages me when I see others inspired by what I do."
It's a reflection of the kind of leader she hopes to be; someone whose impact extends beyond the job itself.
For women considering a career in aviation or ground operations, Caroline's advice comes from experience. "My advice to every woman out there is to always put God first. Don't be selective when it comes to opportunities. Whatever comes your way, do it with passion as you wait for something better, as long as it is genuine."
She encourages women to focus on continuous growth, remain patient and trust the journey.
"Focus on personal growth in all aspects of your life. Don't allow vulnerability to lead you into temptation, no matter the situation. Be patient, trust God always and rely on Him, for He is the rewarder."
Caroline's story is a reminder that aviation is powered by people with different talents, backgrounds and ambitions. Sometimes, it begins with a childhood fascination. Sometimes, it starts with the courage to step into a space where few have gone before. And sometimes, it is simply about believing that no dream is too big to pursue.
