More Than a Journey

BY SHARON KIENDE

more-than-a-journey

For every smooth journey a passenger enjoys, there are countless moments behind the scenes that often go unnoticed. They are the moments of quick thinking, calm reassurance and quiet determination that rarely make headlines but leave lasting impressions.

For Eric Mukira, those moments are simply part of the job.

As Kenya Airways' Lagos Station Manager, Eric spends his days working closely with the Ground Handling Agents, ensuring they understand the airline's operational standards and customer service expectations. From briefing teams before flights to making sure Standard Operating Procedures are followed, his focus is simple: every passenger deserves a seamless experience from the moment they arrive at the airport.

But aviation has a way of reminding you that no two days are ever the same.

One passenger's journey began with uncertainty after a visa issue threatened to derail his trip to Zanzibar. Through close coordination with the relevant authorities, Eric helped him secure the necessary clearance just in time.

The relief, however, was short-lived because just when it seemed the crisis had been averted, another unfolded.

In the rush to catch the flight, the passenger mistakenly assumed his wife had checked in one of his bags, while she believed he had done the same. It wasn't until they landed in Zanzibar that they realised the luggage had never left Nairobi.

Panic quickly set in but Eric personally followed up, tracing the missing bag to airport security after it had been safely recovered. Once ownership was confirmed, arrangements were made to reunite the passenger with his belongings.

What could have been remembered as a stressful travel experience became something entirely different. The passenger was so grateful that he even shared the experience in a local newspaper; an unexpected but meaningful reminder of the impact that genuine customer care can have.

It's this philosophy that has shaped his approach throughout his career. Customer service, he believes, doesn't end when a flight departs. Sometimes, the most meaningful part of the journey begins when something goes wrong and someone chooses to help.

Away from the airport, Eric swaps boarding gates for racetracks, following motorsport with the same enthusiasm he brings to his work. And when it's time to unwind, you'll likely find him listening to rhumba music, another passion that keeps him grounded after the fast pace of airport operations.

Stories like Eric's remind us that our legacy has never been built on aircraft alone. It has been built by people who choose to care, to act and to go the extra mile when it matters most.

Because sometimes, being There When It Matters isn't about grand gestures. It's about answering the phone when a worried passenger calls. It's about refusing to give up until a missing bag is found. It's about turning a stressful moment into one that restores confidence, builds trust and reminds our guests that wherever their journey takes them, Kenya Airways will always be there when it matters most.
