Inside Passenger Ramp Services

By Sharon Kiende

For Beryl Opondo, mornings start bright and early at 4:45 AM. Between getting her child ready for school and managing her parenting duties, she sets the tone for a structured and focused day. By 6:45 AM, she is heading out, catching up on emails and reviewing reports to stay ahead before officially starting work at 7:00 AM. Her first task is a walkaround of ramp operations, ensuring flights depart on time and all activities align with Standard Operating Procedures.

The rest of her day is a careful balance of operational briefings, team meetings, and check-ins designed to ensure seamless passenger ramp services. Beryl makes it a point to connect with her team both formally and informally, fostering collaboration and boosting morale. She often hosts coaching sessions to guide staff toward their professional goals. Depending on the flight schedule, she may also oversee the afternoon flight wave before wrapping up her workday. By 7:15 PM, she is home with her family, helping her children with homework and unwinding before aiming to be in bed by 9:30 PM for a fresh start the next day.

Balancing work and life in the fast-paced world of aviation requires structure and support. Beryl keeps a detailed schedule of key events, meetings, and training sessions, and she delegates responsibilities to her capable team to ensure operations continue smoothly while she maintains personal priorities. She also takes quarterly breaks of at least ten days to recharge and recalibrate. Between teamwork at work and support at home, she has learned how to maintain a healthy and sustainable balance.

One of the most memorable moments in her career came on her very first day at Kenya Airways. Putting on the KQ uniform for the first time filled her with immense pride and a sense of purpose. The adrenaline of operations, the camaraderie among colleagues, and the satisfaction of seeing flights depart safely and on time continue to make every day rewarding.

For Beryl, the most fulfilling part of her role is knowing that she plays a key part in delivering safe, timely departures and creating a seamless travel experience for passengers. She also takes pride in working alongside a dedicated team, recognizing that every successful operation is a collective achievement. This shared sense of accomplishment and commitment keeps her motivated every day.

A Day In The Life Of | A Cabin Crew Mother

01 Sep 2023

It is 0230hours. Ngina's alarm rings loudly. She silences it as soon as she can so that she does not wake her husband and her two boys (an infant and toddler). She has an early start today with KQ600 to Mombasa. She jumps out of bed. As she heads to the bathroom a lot of planning goes in her mind.
